Working with the Voice

I have been singing my entire life, at home, with family, with friends, then in choirs, at parties, on stage and moving into specialising in voice (Music MA) at Glasgow University. I use my voice as one of my main tools - not only to sing in a classical sense, but to communicate, to express myself, to process, to vent, to create and to play.

Over the past few years, I have been exploring a more embodied approach - working with breath, body and space to compose music, to create art, to find calm, to facilitate and share. This process has included working in schools with young people with additional support needs; making a new show called Dussskk for teenagers that experiments with all the facets of the voice; and training with the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble in New York.

In 2025 I was awarded funding from Creative Scotland to continue this research - focusing on learning, shadowing, experimenting and teaching over the course of a year. This practical research will be prompted by a desire to explore how we can use the voice to be creative, to play, to sing and to make sounds together, in ways that are multi-sensory, accessible, and responsive to the individual.
